The Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation offers a variety of educational opportunities for all ages. Our Conservation Education program annually serves over 12,000 people who are interested in learning more about the natural world. We teach programs about local biodiversity, restoration, fishing, maple syruping, habitats of Illinois, water quality and a host of other natural resource topics.
While our primary audience is elementary aged students, we also offer opportunities for older students and adults to investigate our natural resources. In addition to our standard school programs, we offer the regional Mighty Acorns program to area schools. This program involves over 8,000 Chicagoland students in educational activities throughout the school year. If you are a teacher, and wish to bring your group to the Foundation for a program, visit the School Programs page for more information. Teachers also desire education about natural resources; therefore we develop and offer workshops for formal and non-formal educators. As an Illinois approved Professional Development Provider (through ISBE), we can offer teachers CPDU’s and CEU’s that help them achieve recertification as a teacher.
Both Girl and Boy Scout groups visit us to earn badges and learn about nature. We have arranged special weekend trips, Eagle Scout projects and service projects for many troops. Visit the Scout Programs page for more information.
Often, children desire more contact with the outdoors than they can attain with school trips or scout groups. To meet this need, we offer weeklong summer programs for children ages 4 - 15. Each summer over 100 children visit the Foundation for a week of activities and learning experiences. During their week, they may try their hand at fishing, take adventuresome hikes, investigate the homes of animals, make crafts to take home, and meet other kids their age. Every summer there are seven different weeks of programs, each with a different theme and for a specific age range. Because of the program popularity, registration fills fast. Look for the newest Summer Program listing in early March.
Visit our page Just for Kids. There you will find life histories of native animals, printable fun pages, activities that kids can do on their own, and ways that they can help conserve our natural resources. Check back often as items will change and be added monthly.
Many of our conservation education efforts are conducted in cooperation with other public and private agencies and with financial support from agencies, corporations, and other foundations. Cooperative student training projects include an undergraduate intern and a graduate student program.
